5 Reasons Why Vietnam is a Great Cycling Tour Destination
If you asked a hundred people to name their ideal cycling tour destination, we have to admit it’s unlikely that many of them would say ‘Vietnam’. The country may be known for its landscapes, its culture, its food, and its turbulent history, but as a cycling destination? Maybe not. But the country is one of the world’s fastest-growing cycling destinations, with increasing numbers of riders discovering its stunning scenery and spectacular biking routes. Still need convincing? Here are five reasons why Vietnam should be the destination for your next cycling tour…

It Has Landscapes to Suit All Riders

Whether you’re a casual cyclist who wants to do short rides on flat roads, or a serious hardcore rider who wants to tackle epic mountain passes, Vietnam has it all.

Riders who want an easy, relaxed tour - maybe just a day trip or an overnighter - will love the flat, peaceful riverside roads and jungle paths of the Mekong Delta, or a fun tour of vibrant towns and cities such as Saigon, Hoi An or the capital Hanoi. Motorbikes and bicycles remain the default modes of transport for most Vietnamese so joining them on a bike is the best way to immerse yourself in the Vietnamese way of life - you can’t fully experience it from behind the windows of a car or tour bus.

Riders who are up for more of a challenge will love the rolling hills of the Central Highlands and the Central Coast, which offers beautiful coastal roads including one of Southeast Asia’s iconic roads - the Hai Van Pass - as well as the historic cities of Hoi An and Hue, which are ideal for discovery by bike.

And for the hardcore, whether road or off-road/gravel, Vietnam’s spectacular north boasts some of the most epic mountain passes in Southeast Asia, in particular the legendary Ha Giang Loop - pure paradise for serious climbers.

It Has the Ideal Year-Round Climate

Whether you’re a rider who likes it hot and sweaty, or someone who prefers to ride in cooler temperatures, Vietnam has the season for you. Whilst many think of the country as being permanently hot and tropical, its seasons are actually quite diverse.

The South follows the typical Southeast Asian pattern of humid, sweaty summers and dry, warm winters, with a rainy season that runs from May to October. And don’t be put off by the term ‘rainy season’ - you’ll rarely see a full day of rain, just most often half an hour or so in the afternoon or evening. Time to park up and enjoy an iced coffee or a cold beer while you wait for the clouds to part.

The North offers cooler temperatures - even in the hottest season, temperatures in the mountains rarely exceed 25C, and in winter can get as low as 5C. Even Hanoi experiences wintry temperatures of 14C in the winter months.

So whichever type of rider you are, you’ll always find a season in Vietnam to suit your style.

Its Refuelling Options Are Second to None

Vietnam may not (yet) be renowned as a cycling destination, but its culinary reputation is already well established. Vietnamese food, in particular pho and banh mi, has spread worldwide and is famous for its taste, healthiness, and vegetarian-friendly diversity.

Refuelling is key for cyclists, especially on those long days where you’re really putting in the hard miles, and in Vietnam, refuelling is both easy and an absolute pleasure. It seems you’re never more than a few hundred metres away from a noodle stall, a cheap and cheerful com binh dan (“people’s rice”) restaurant, a fresh fruit stall, a juice shop, or one of the country’s ubiquitous cafes (that lethally strong local coffee gives you a great - and legal - boost!) This means the chances of encountering the dreaded ‘bonk’ - that moment when your body starts to give up because you’ve not taken onboard enough energy - are close to non-existent in Vietnam.

And at the end of a long day, there are few better ways to recover than over a typical Vietnamese barbecue, washed down with plenty of cold beers, ideally from one of the country’s superb craft breweries.

It Offers Excellent Hospitality

The word “hospitality” comes from Greek, where it meant “the love of strangers”, and as you cycle through Vietnam - particularly rural areas and villages - that’s exactly what you’ll experience. The Vietnamese love to meet and interact with visitors, whether it’s to practice their English, take selfies with you, or just pull your arm hair (yes, that’s right - it happens a lot). As you ride through local villages you’ll be made to feel like an honoured guest or a celebrity, and it's not uncommon for complete strangers to offer you food & drink or invite you into their homes.

And that warm welcome of course is present in Vietnamese hotels, whether you’re staying in a luxury 5* resort, a 3* mountain lodge, or one of the country’s many farm or homestays. You (and your bike) will be very well looked after and fed, allowing you to fully relax and recharge for the next day’s riding.

It’s Home to Southeast Asia’s Best Cycling Tour Company!

We’re biased of course, but in over four years of organising cycling tours in Vietnam we’ve gained a reputation for quality, safety, honesty, reliability, service, and of course hospitality. We’re not a tour operator that sells cycling tours - we’re passionate cyclists who know the country’s best cycling routes inside out and love sharing our knowledge and experience with our guests.

We have a growing team of travel consultants, cycling guides and tour leaders, mechanics, support drivers, and local partners to make sure that our guests can ride in comfort and safety, and have a fun time while they’re doing it. Guests don’t always see it, but a proper cycling tour is a huge logistical exercise and we’ve got those logistics nailed down all over the country.

And one thing our guests always tell us? That their trip was like travelling with friends. We recruit our cycling guides not just for their local knowledge and cycling ability, but for personality too - they’re there as travelling companions. That means not just ensuring your enjoyment and safety during the ride, but firing up the barbecue and cracking open the cold beers at the end of the day.

We love cycling, we love Vietnam, and we love sharing it with our guests. Come and join us and learn just why Vietnam is the perfect destination for your next cycling tour!
