After an early morning departure (no later than 7 a.m recommended) from Hanoi, a short transfer brings you into Hoa Binh Province, well clear of busy city traffic. 

The ride begins on quiet rural roads, immediately offering a sense of adventure without feeling remote. Gentle climbs lead into the Ba Khan area, where limestone mountains rise above cultivated valleys and small villages. The terrain is varied but manageable, with steady ascents balanced by smooth descents and well-maintained backroads.

As the route approaches Mai Chau, the landscape opens into a broad valley surrounded by dramatic karst peaks and rice fields. The final stretch rolls easily into the heart of the valley, where traditional stilt houses and friendly local life create a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll spend the night at Mrs. Chung Homestay, a comfortable base to relax and ease into the rhythm of cycling through Vietnam’s northwest highlands.

After breakfast in Mai Chau, you begin riding directly from your accommodation, following pre-loaded GPS tracks through the surrounding countryside. Leaving the valley floor, the route gradually climbs away from Mai Chau, transitioning from open farmland into quieter hill roads and village tracks.

Today’s ride is more adventurous, with longer climbs and deeper immersion into rural northern Vietnam, yet it remains safe and accessible. The roads are lightly trafficked, and villages appear regularly along the route, offering a reassuring sense of connection despite the increasingly wild scenery. You’ll pass terraced rice fields, forested slopes, and small ethnic minority settlements as the terrain rises toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

As you approach Pu Luong, the landscape becomes lusher and more dramatic, with cool forest air and wide views across layered valleys. A final descent leads you to Pu Luong Natura Bungalows, a comfortable eco-lodge tucked into the hills—an ideal place to rest after a rewarding day of self-guided mountain cycling.

Leaving Pu Luong, the road drops quickly out of the reserve, setting the tone for a fast and satisfying day on the bike. The opening kilometers are dominated by a long descent through forested hills, where smooth pavement and gentle curves encourage an easy, flowing pace.

As the elevation tapers off, the route settles into rolling terrain, threading through river valleys and quiet agricultural areas. Small villages and local traffic appear regularly, giving the ride a grounded, lived-in feel rather than a sense of isolation. Short rises break up the momentum, but overall the profile favors steady progress rather than sustained climbing.

The final stretch follows lowland roads toward Thach Thanh, with open landscapes and wider valleys replacing the steep mountain scenery of earlier days. Thach Lam Retreat sits in a calm rural setting, offering a comfortable and well-earned stop after a day defined by speed, rhythm, and changing terrain.

The ride out of Thach Quang begins on quiet rural roads, easing into the day with mostly flat terrain and a relaxed early pace. The route passes through small farming communities and open countryside, where the landscape feels settled and distinctly lowland compared to previous days.

Midway through the ride, the profile starts to change as the road gradually rises toward Cuc Phuong National Park. The climb is steady rather than demanding, with the surroundings shifting from agricultural land to dense forest. Traffic thins noticeably as you approach the park boundary, and the air becomes cooler under the canopy.

The final kilometers wind inside the national park on smooth, shaded roads, surrounded by limestone hills and primary rainforest. Riding here feels calm and contained, with long stretches of uninterrupted forest. The day ends at a simple guesthouse within Cuc Phuong, placing you deep inside Vietnam’s oldest national park for the night.

The day begins with a gentle exit from Cuc Phuong National Park, following shaded roads that gradually descend out of the forest. Early riding is calm and uninterrupted, with long stretches beneath dense tree cover before the landscape slowly opens.

Beyond the park boundary, the terrain becomes flatter and more open as the route moves into Ninh Binh Province. The ride weaves through quiet villages, rice paddies, and narrow countryside lanes, with limestone karsts starting to rise abruptly from the fields. Elevation changes are minor, making this a smooth and efficient ride that allows time to take in the surroundings.

The final kilometers lead into the heart of Ninh Binh’s rural lowlands, where dramatic rock formations, waterways, and farmland converge. You finish the day at Ninh Binh Hidden Charm Hotel, well positioned to explore the region’s iconic karst landscape and river scenery off the bike.

In the morning you are free to enjoy Ninh Binh at your own pace. A boat trip through Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is highly recommended, offering a final look at the region’s limestone karsts, river valleys, and cave systems from the water. The ride passes quietly through narrow waterways and low caves, framed by steep rock formations and dense greenery.

After checking out, a private van collects you for the transfer back to Hanoi. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours, marking the end of the cycling route and the conclusion of the trip.
